When will I know what my nose is going to look like?
The majority of the swelling in the nose after a primary rhinoplasty goes down within a month after surgery. The top of the nose by the eyes can have swelling that lasts 3 months, the middle of the nose can have swelling that lasts 6 months and the tip of the nose has swelling that can last up to a year. The steroid dose pack Dr. Ali may give you helps reduce swelling. Taping the nose after surgery and avoiding salty foods also helps.
Does icing help?
Icing can help swelling and pain for the first 48 hours after surgery. Dr. Ali recommends ice packs or a frozen bag of peas (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) covered in a paper towel to absorb any defrosting of the ice packs that may occur. The water can interfere with the splint and tapes, so be careful not to get the splint wet.
Is it normal to feel anxious with these splint inside my nose?
For some patients, the sensation of the splints inside the nose along with swelling after surgery can make it seem like it’s hard to breathe. Other patients are not as bothered. Everyone is different and everyone is allowed to feel differently. Using the medicines and instructions Dr. Ali provides will help if this is a problem. Remember, it can help to do open mouth breathing in and out as the nose can be swollen right after surgery even with the splints in the nose. Remember, Just Breathe™.
When can I go back to the gym, running, yoga class, weight lifting, playing sports etc?
This all depends on what kind of surgery you had with Dr. Ali. Exercise and fitness is important to staying happy and healthy, and we value and appreciate that. Right after surgery, your nose will need time to heal and Dr. Ali will help come up with a plan to get you back to your fitness routine!
When can I put make-up on my nose? What about my face?
As soon as the tapes are off, it’s okay to use makeup on the nose. It is okay to use makeup on the face whenever you are comfortable after surgery. Please don’t forget to protect your skin with sunscreen! This will help the final appearance of any scars.
Do I need to do scar massage?
If you had an open rhinoplasty, the tiny scar at the columella of the nose does not need any scar massage. This area heals quickly and well. If you had a closed rhinoplasty, all the scars are hidden on the inside of the nose. If you have any specific questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Ali anytime.
