What’s the Difference Between a Post-Trauma and Functional Rhinoplasty?

A nose job isn’t just a nose job; in fact, there are a variety of rhinoplasty procedures that can help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

If your aesthetic goals include addressing any issues that may have arisen as a result of injury or trauma to the nose, you may be wondering which nose job procedure is right for you: the post-trauma rhinoplasty or the functional rhinoplasty.

But what are the differences between the two? And how do you know which one is right for you?

Are There Differences Between Post-Trauma and Functional Rhinoplasties?

In terms of the overall goals of each rhinoplasty procedure, there’s really no difference: they’re both dedicated to helping you achieve optimal nasal health and breathing via surgical means.

However, as previously mentioned, the approach that each one takes can be very different. Functional rhinoplasty may be more focused on improving the patient’s breathing abilities by alleviating hidden issues, like a deviated septum or too-narrow nasal passages. Both of these problems can make it difficult for a patient to breathe, leading to snoring, sleep apnea, and other health conditions.

The post-trauma rhinoplasty incorporates a functional approach, but it may also involve addressing cosmetic concerns as well. For example, if your nose was broken during a company softball game (it happens!), your plastic surgeon will want to repair any nasal damage to curb breathing issues. Additionally, your plastic surgeon may also focus on correcting any nasal bridge deformities, which can often lead to a less-than-aesthetically-desirable crooked nose.

Regardless of whether you need a post-trauma rhinoplasty or a functional rhinoplasty, make sure you choose a plastic surgeon who understands your goals and makes you feel comfortable throughout the entire process.
